Mysterious salt worlds in Berchtesgaden

In the past salt was precious just like gold! Therefore, only a few people were allowed in the tunnels. Fortunately this is nowadays different: Every adult and child adventurer can discover where the “white gold” is hidden deep down in the mountain; where it is mined during the day since 1517.

Into another world!
The mountain has its own rules and it well not let you explore it with normal street clothes! Each visitor first slips into the real miner’s garbs – and then goes with the mining railroad deep into the mountain’s interior!

After 700 meters you are in another mysterious world – even the railroad doesn’t come further: Now it’s up to you to “conquer” your way over chutes and through dark tunnels! There is a lot to be discovered: Disused sink-works as well as a colourful glimmering salt cave that reminds of the fairy-tale king Ludwig II. Expert guide leaders and an informative film explain to you the mining of the brine in the past and nowadays.

A raft-trip in the mountain!
The highlight: You will glide with a raft over the glimmering salt lake deep in the interior of the mountain, surrounded by mining lights and noises. Finally visit our mountain tavern for some refreshments!

Closed: Mardi Gras, Good Friday, Whit Monday and All Saints’ Day. Special opening hours on Chirstmas and Easter.

Visiting Time:
The tour is about 1 hour long – You should plan 1.5 to 2 hours to include the ticket purchase, reception and returning of the miner’s clothes (protective clothing). A temperature of 12°C prevails the whole year. No age restrictions for children. The carrying along of dogs and strollers are unfortunately not possible.
